This is my fight song.

The Challenge
Matt was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition that means “water on the brain,” before he was even born. He had his first surgery at 5 days old. While trying to live a normal life, Matt endured numerous shunt malfunctions and was often hospitalized for extended periods.

The Fight
During his 7th and 8th grade years, Matt had 48 additional brain surgeries—bringing his total to 96 in his young life! He also suffered multiple strokes, frequent seizures, and eventually Traumatic Brain Injury. It was uncertain if he would ever walk again. When he started high school, he was confined to a wheelchair.

The Goal
In a major triumph, Matt graduated from high school on time and walked on stage to receive his diploma. He gave a speech to his classmates, reiterating a goal he had set for himself over the years, “One day I WILL run the Boston Marathon.” Although he developed epilepsy and became legally blind, he never stopped believing in himself. He fulfilled his lifelong dream in October 2021.
